Depreciation calculator
Estimate tax depreciation using the diminishing value or straight line method, with part-year apportionment in the first year.
| Year | Opening value | Depreciation | Business portion | Closing value |
|---|
Use the rate set by Inland Revenue for your asset class (see IRD's depreciation rate finder). The first year is apportioned by whole months owned. Assets costing $1,000 or less (excl. GST) can usually be expensed immediately. Investment Boost: new assets (or assets new to New Zealand) bought on or after 22 May 2025 can claim an extra 20% of cost in the first year, with normal depreciation on the remaining 80%. Second-hand assets bought in New Zealand and residential buildings do not qualify. Buildings with an estimated useful life of 50 years or more are depreciated at 0% from the 2024–25 income year. Private-use adjustments are simplified; disposals, depreciation recovery and pooling are not included.
