Common questions
How can I check a charity in New Zealand?
Every registered charity is listed on the Charities Register, run by Charities Services at the Department of Internal Affairs (register.charities.govt.nz). Our Charities Report brings together the annual returns of Indian community charities, so you can search for one by name or registration number and see its income and spending for every year on record.
What is the difference between a registered charity and an incorporated society?
A registered charity is registered with Charities Services and files an annual return every year. An incorporated society is registered with the Companies Office and files financial statements there. A society can also be a registered charity. Our Charities Report covers registered charities, and our Societies Report covers societies that are not registered charities.
Which funders give grants to Indian community organisations?
In the records we cover, gaming trusts (pokie grants) gave the largest share. Other funders include the Lottery Grants Board, COGS, the Ethnic Communities Development Fund, community trusts such as Foundation North, and city and district councils. The Grants Report shows the totals for each funder and each organisation.
How can I find out what grants an organisation has received?
Type the organisation's name into the Grants Report. It shows every approved grant we found, year by year, with the funder and the published record each grant came from. Some funders do not publish full lists of who they fund, so their grants cannot be shown.
Are the figures audited?
No. Figures are shown as each organisation filed them or as each funder published them. They have not been audited or checked by us, and we give no opinion on any organisation.
How often are the reports updated?
We check the public registers and grant sources every month for new annual returns, financial statements and grant records. Each report shows when its data was last updated.
Can I read the reports in Hindi or Punjabi?
Yes. Each report has a language choice at the top: English, Hindi (हिन्दी) or Punjabi (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ).
What if something is wrong or an organisation is missing?
Please email ysm@yugrajca.co.nz with the organisation's name and what needs correcting, and we will check it against the public records.
